How Gifting Works on Buy Nothing (Not First-Come, First-Served)
Overview
Buy Nothing communities are built around connection, care, and intentional giving—not speed. The platform does not operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Not a First-Come, First-Served Model
Unlike many online marketplaces, Buy Nothing encourages Givers to allow time for community participation rather than immediately choosing the first response.
This approach is often referred to as “letting it simmer.”
What “Let It Simmer” Means
Letting a Give simmer typically involves:
- Leaving a Give post open for 12–24 hours
- Allowing more neighbors to see the post
- Creating space for thoughtful expressions of interest
This helps ensure broader visibility and more equitable access within the community.
The Giver Chooses
After allowing time for responses, the Giver has full discretion in choosing who receives the gift.
Givers may choose a recipient based on:
- A specific need expressed in an Ask
- A sense of connection or affinity
- Any reason that feels right to them
There is no requirement to explain or justify the decision.
Why This Approach Matters
This model supports:
- Stronger, more intentional neighborhood connections
- Reduced competition and pressure
- A culture of generosity rather than urgency
The Buy Nothing Project prioritizes relationships and trust over transactional speed.
Summary
Buy Nothing does not use a first-come, first-served model. Givers are encouraged to let posts simmer and choose recipients intentionally, helping build more thoughtful, connected, and inclusive local gift economies.
