Can I Use the Term “ISO”?

Overview

Using the term “ISO” (In Search Of) is not prohibited in Buy Nothing communities. There is no rule requiring members to avoid this term.

Guidance on Communication Style

Buy Nothing encourages communication that helps neighbors connect clearly and kindly. While shorthand like “ISO” is allowed, participants are encouraged to use language that is easy to understand and welcoming to a wide range of community members.

The Buy Nothing Project prioritizes communication that supports inclusion, clarity, and neighborly connection.

Human-Centered Language

Buy Nothing resources recommend focusing on human-centered communication rather than rigid or impersonal language.

Excerpt from the Fine Print (Communication Guidance):

“Please focus on human-centered language. Try to avoid overly rigid or impersonal communication styles and business jargon (like ‘FYI’ or ‘BUMP’). Be kind, clear, and direct. We want communication between neighbors to reflect the generous culture we are building.”

This guidance is intended to support warmth and accessibility, not to restrict specific words or phrases.

Platform Note

Buy Nothing participation is also available through the Buy Nothing web and mobile platform, where a wide range of communication styles are welcome and commonly used.

Summary

Using “ISO” is allowed in Buy Nothing communities. While shorthand terms are acceptable, participants are encouraged to communicate in clear, kind, and human-centered ways that support connection and inclusivity.
