Can Gifts Associated With Israel or Palestine Be Posted?
Overview
Buy Nothing communities are intended to be inclusive, safe, and lawful spaces for gifting. Posts related to global conflicts, including Israel and Palestine, require particular care to ensure compliance with laws and alignment with community standards.
Compliance and Legality
Prohibited Requests or Offers
Asks or Gives that are intended for, benefit, or materially support:
- Any terrorist organization, or
- Any group identified by a participant’s national government as supporting a recognized terrorist organization
are not permitted. Such posts violate the Terms of Service of the Buy Nothing Project and may also be illegal.
Permitted Requests or Offers
Posts are permitted when they involve:
- Gifts from or for Israel or Gaza, and
- Items that participants intend to personally give to Israelis or Palestinians
Examples include humanitarian items such as medical supplies, clothing, food, or other forms of direct aid, provided they do not involve prohibited recipients.
Community Impact and Dialogue
Topics connected to armed conflict can be deeply personal and distressing for community members.
Consider Community Impact
If a Give or Ask is causing distress or conflict within a local community, participants and admins are encouraged to consider the impact on safety, trust, and cohesion.
Encourage Respectful Dialogue
While Buy Nothing does not take positions on geopolitical conflicts, respectful and thoughtful discussion—when appropriate—can help communities navigate difficult topics while maintaining mutual respect and understanding.
Expectations for Participation
Participants are expected to:
- Follow all applicable laws and Buy Nothing policies
- Avoid content that promotes harm or illegal activity
- Engage with sensitivity, respect, and awareness of differing perspectives
Summary
Gifts associated with Israel or Palestine may be posted when they are lawful and intended for direct, humanitarian use.
