Why Use Buy Nothing Shipping?
Overview
Buy Nothing Shipping provides a simple, secure way to share items across distances when local gifting is not possible. The feature is designed to expand access to free goods while protecting privacy and reducing unnecessary retail purchases.
How Buy Nothing Shipping Works
Buy Nothing Shipping is integrated directly into the app through a partnership with UPS, creating a streamlined and privacy-conscious experience.
The Shipping Flow
For the Giver
- Once an Ask is matched globally, the giver brings the item (unpackaged) to a participating UPS Store
- The giver shows the QR code generated in the app
- No address or payment details are exchanged with the recipient
For the Recipient
- The recipient does not need to share a personal address with the giver
- Tracking updates are provided directly through the app
Data and Privacy Protection
- Address information, cost calculation, and transaction details are handled through a secure UPS integration
- Givers and recipients do not exchange financial accounts or personal contact information
This design helps ensure privacy, safety, and ease of use for both parties.
Why Buy Nothing Offers Shipping
Ask First
Buy Nothing encourages people to ask for what they need within the community before purchasing new items from retailers. Shipping allows that principle to extend beyond local boundaries.
Global Gifting
When an item cannot find a local recipient, shipping makes it possible for the item to reach someone elsewhere who needs it. This supports broader reuse and waste reduction.
Reducing Waste
By enabling items to move to where they are needed most, Buy Nothing Shipping helps keep usable goods out of landfills and extends their useful life.
The Buy Nothing Project developed this feature to support thoughtful sharing while maintaining privacy and trust.
Summary
Buy Nothing Shipping allows items to be gifted beyond local communities using a secure, app-based process powered by UPS. The feature protects personal information, encourages asking before buying, and helps ensure usable items continue to circulate rather than become waste.
