Can I Change the Three Membership Questions in My Buy Nothing Group?
Overview
Buy Nothing Facebook groups include three membership questions by default. Admins may customize these questions, provided specific requirements are followed to protect members, maintain alignment with Buy Nothing values, and avoid legal or privacy risks.
What Changes Are Allowed
Admins may edit the three membership questions as long as the questions remain aligned with the principles of a pure gift economy.
Acceptable purposes include:
- Confirming understanding of group rules
- Reinforcing expectations around giving, asking, and gratitude
- Supporting respectful participation
What Is Not Allowed
No Collection of Personal Data
Admins must not request or collect Personally Identifiable Information (PII) from members. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Exact addresses or cross streets
- Phone numbers
- Email addresses
- Any other identifying or private information
Important Liability Notice
Collecting or storing private data about group members is prohibited and violates both Buy Nothing policies and the hosting platform’s Terms of Service.
Any customization of membership questions is done at the admin’s discretion. Admins are personally responsible for changes they make. If data privacy is violated, group administrators—not the Buy Nothing Project—may be held liable for resulting issues or damages.
Best Practice Recommendation
When customizing questions:
- Keep them minimal and mission-focused
- Avoid anything that could be interpreted as data collection
- Prioritize clarity, safety, and inclusion
Summary
Admins may customize the three membership questions in a Buy Nothing group, but questions must align with gift economy principles and must not request personal or identifying information. Collecting private data is prohibited and may expose admins to personal liability.
