What do 'Flash' and 'Simmer' mean?
Overview
Buy Nothing communities do not operate on a “first come, first served” model. Instead, the focus is on intentional gifting and community connection. Subscribers have access to an additional feature that helps communicate the timing or urgency of a Give.
This feature allows Subscribers to indicate whether a Give needs to move quickly or can remain open for more thoughtful consideration.
Flash Give
A Flash Give is used when an item needs to be picked up quickly.
When a Give is marked as a Flash Give:
- A clear visual indicator appears on the post
- Neighbors understand that the item is available for immediate pickup
- The post signals urgency without prioritizing speed over connection
This option is helpful when space, time, or logistics require a fast exchange.
Let It Simmer
Let It Simmer is used when there is flexibility around timing.
When a Give is marked as Simmer:
- Neighbors have more time to see the post
- People can express interest thoughtfully
- The post signals that there is no rush
This option supports deeper engagement and gives more community members the opportunity to participate.
How to Use This Feature
When creating a Give, Subscribers can:
- Select Flash or Simmer in the post settings
This helps neighbors understand expectations before responding.
